I am so happy to share some amazing news: dotterels have been spotted at Shelly Park Beach! This recent sighting is a proof that our efforts to protect these precious birds are making a real difference.
When I founded the Dotterel Conservation Society in Year 10, I had one goal in mind: to give these endangered birds a fighting chance. It hasn’t been an easy road, but moments like this remind me why we do what we do. Whether it’s rallying students to set up traplines, collaborating with local communities to safeguard breeding grounds, or simply raising awareness, every small action counts. And today, we’ve added another victory to our journey.
Pest Free Howick Ward has placed a sign at Shelly Park Beach to let everyone know these incredible birds are here. But this is just the beginning. For dotterels to thrive, they need our ongoing care and vigilance. Sandy beaches might look empty to us, but for dotterels, it’s their home, a place where they can camouflage their nests. It’s up to all of us to tread carefully and keep these areas safe.
Here’s how you can help:
-
- Keep dogs on leashes: Loose dogs can unknowingly trample nests or scare dotterels away from their breeding areas. Leashing your dog ensures their safety and that of the birds.
- Put collars on your cats!: Cats are hunters, and even well fed ones can be a danger to ground nesting birds. Bells help give the birds a warning and a chance to escape.
- Watch where you step: Dotterel nests are often hard to spot, blending in perfectly with the sand. Stay on marked paths and keep an eye out for signs or fenced areas.
- Spread the word: Many people don’t realise how vulnerable these birds are. Share what you’ve learned with friends and family, and encourage them to do their part
